December 2001 We have been accepted into the Countryside Stewardship scheme. We have established buffer zones around the perimeter of many fields which are planted with beneficial grass species. These grass margins extend and enhance natural field boundaries such as hedges, verges and water course banks by providing enhanced habitat. They also protect hedgerows and water courses from pesticides. We will be planting new hedgerows in the near future as the next step of the scheme. Other management practices, such as reduced hedge trimming and new hedge establishment will provide more food and shelter for birds and other animals. Watch this space to see if we are accepted to the scheme and how we progress in establishing the new management system. |
